Art Therapy online

Online Art Therapy is a valuable option for individuals seeking emotional expression and mental health support through creative means, especially when in-person sessions are not feasible. Here are some key things to know about online art therapy for those considering it.

How Online Art Therapy works

Online art therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. The first appointment will be a gentle online session where I get to know you at a pace that you find helpful, and we explore what you want and need from our sessions. During this online session, we will think about several things together. We will consider the space you are in and any limitations it may offer. What art materials you would like to bring or have access to during sessions. We will also think about camera angles and things that will make you feel comfortable on screen. We will think about where you will store your artwork made in sessions. We will explore how this will best work for you – it might be helpful to use a sketchbook or create a folder so that images are put away after our session.

Preparing for your sessions

When preparing for your session it might be useful to prepare a space that is comfortable, and quiet, where you can focus without distractions and that will not be disturbed. Bring things to your session that will help you to feel comfortable, such as something to drink, tissues, a blanket or cushions, and some basic art materials. Art materials can be a biro/pencil and a piece of paper if you don’t have access to traditional materials. If you are using markers or paints, it might be helpful to think about protecting the surfaces or carpets, by using newspaper or plastic coverings. If you want additional privacy then using earphones, or headphones could be helpful for the session.
